에세이 1-2 One Disastrous Vacation

 

Things didn’t improve much after our arrival in Portland. First, since it had snowed almost 24 inches in a day, we had to find a four-wheel drive rental car to take us to our cabin in the mountains. I think we got the last one in Portland! Two hours into the one-hour drive to the cabin, my dad was still muttering about the inflated rental rates when our overpriced truck spun into a ditch. When we finally arrived, we learned that the driveway hadn’t yet been plowed. Parking on the roadside, we dragged tired bodies and suitcases through the drifts of powdery snow only to discover, upon reaching the cabin, that the power had gone out, and had no intentions of ever coming back on over the course of our entire visit. Four days without water or electricity meant no Christmas dinner, no showers, and no lights on the tree.

 

Despite all of these unanticipated challenges, it somehow turned out to be a pretty memorable, happy Christmas. Since we didn’t have lights, we made our own decorations for the tree out of pine cones we found in the woods. We couldn’t lay around watching movies, so instead we went sledding. Without electric heat, we warmed our frosty fingers and toes around a warm, cozy fire at night. Since we couldn’t use the oven to make Christmas dinner, we competed to see how could make the most original sandwich instead. By the end, I’d gotten to know my cousins and grandparents in a whole new way. It wasn’t the holiday we’d anticipated, but it was a holiday we’ll never forget.

1. inflated 는 과거분사이며, 앞의 뒤의 명사 rental rates를 수식합니다. '부풀려진 렌탈비용' 이라고 해석합니다.

 

2. 분사의 개념

분사는 동사가 형태변화를 하여 형용사로써 명사를 수식하는 기능을 하는 것입니다. 현재분사와 과거분사 2종류가 있습니다.

 

1) 현재분사 (V + ing / ~하는) => I saw a boy sleeping on the bed. (자고 있는 소년)

TIP. 능동분사(V ing)와 현재 진행형은 (Be ~ V ing) 'Be' 의 유무로 판단이 가능하지만, 어떤 동사는 과거형과 과거분사(P.P)의 형태가 같은 경우가 있습니다. 때문에 문장이 길거나 복잡 할 때는 p.p 형태를 동사의 과거형으로 성급하게 해석하지 않고 본동사가 따로 있는지 꼭 확인해 보는것이 좋습니다. 본 동사가 따로 있는경우 p.p를 과거 분사로 해석합니다.

 

1. parking 의 경우 뒤에 콤마( , )와 문장 (주어와 동사를 포함한 절) 이 있으므로 분사구문 형태 입니다. 분사구문은 접속사가 생략된 상태로 문맥에 맞춰 적당한 접속사를 넣어 해석합니다. 여기서는 'and 을 넣어 '~하고' 라고 해석합니다.
