Essay 4-1 Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Do I see Myself As Others Do?

 

Two weeks ago I was watching a local news story about the lottery. The film footage showed ⓐa young woman standing behind the store counter selling lottery tickets. She had short blond hair, big sparkling eyes, and a huge smile. I recognized her as the woman who worked in the corner drugstore down the street. The next day I walked into the store and said, "Hey, I saw you on TV last night. You looked great." She made a disgusted face.

"I told them not to film me."

"Why not?"

"Because I look so..." She puffed out her cheeks. "Fat!"

I didn't know what to say. So I just repeated, "Well, you looked great."

I thought, "Here is a shining light of a woman who thinks she looks too bad to be on television for five seconds." So I decided to interview some middle-school and high school students to see if they, like this woman, feel bad about the way they look.

 

"Lots of kids think they weigh more than they look," said one freshman.

"Everyone wants to be size zero. ⓑIf not, it's hard to feel really good."

It's easy to see why people feel this way, especially kids. Watch television or flip through a magazine. The females look as though they haven't had a decent meal in months. The males look as though they could be hit in the stomach by a freight train and not even feel it. I turned every page of a popular teen magazine for girls and counted advertisements for makeup and clothes. Out of 220 pages, 70 were ads. That's about ( Ⓒ ) of the magazine!

 

Statistics show that models in advertisements are 9 percent taller and 23 percent thinner than the average woman. With the click of a mouse, computers can create a picture of the perfect face by cleaning up a model's complexion, trimming her chin, and getting rid of lines around her eyes. Here's a news flash: She's not a real person, folks. She's an illusion.

문법구조

 

파란색은 주어, 빨간색은 동사를 의미합니다. 항상 주어와 동사를 파악하여 지문을 읽는 습관을 들이도록 합니다.

 

1. shining light 는 명사로 '눈부신 빛' 이라고 직역하기 보다 뒤의 of a woman을 포함하여 '눈부시게 아름다운 여인'으로 해석하는 것이 문맥상 자연스럽습니다.

 

2. who는 관계대명사로 앞의 명사 woman을 수식합니다.

 

3. look은 '보다(타동사)' 보다 '보이다(자동사)' 로 더 자주 쓰입니다. '보이다'로 암기하는 것이 좋습니다. 보다라는 표현은 'look at' 이 많이 쓰입니다

 

1. 해당문장에서 If는 명사절 접속사로 '~인지 아닌지'로 쓰였습니다.

1. 'it 가주어 to 진주어' 구문입니다. 지문에서 It 을 보면 반드시 뒤에서 to 또는 that 을 찾아보도록 합니다. 이는 '가주어 진주어 구문' 또는 'it 강조 구문' 을 파악하기 위해서 입니다. 또한, It 이 지시 대명사일 경우 꼭 머리속에서 It 이 뜻하는 바를 한번 곱씹고 해석하면 지문의 내용을 파악하는데 큰 도움이 될 것입니다.

 

2. Why는 관계사 뿐만 아니라 의문사, 명사절접속사 역할도 수행함으로 그 기능을 구별해야 합니다. 그 구별은 어순과 구조를 기준으로 합니다.

2) Why he does it -> 그가 그것을 한 이유 (명사절)

3) I have a reason why I went there. -> 그곳에 간 이유가 있다. (관계부사)

 

1번과 같이 Why 뒤에 동사->주어 순으로 나온다면 문장이면 의문절입니다. 그러나 2번과 같이 Why 뒤에 주어->동사 순이면 명사가 되며 문장에서 주어 또는 목적어가 됩니다.
