Essay 1-3 The Case Against Disposable Chopsticks

 

Some people worry that doing away with the disposable chopstick industry will destroy a vital source of employment in China. According to their statistics, over 300 plants specializing in the production of these disposable wooden sticks employ over 100,000 people. And yet, the question must be asked: what will these people do in ten years, when the forests have been obliterated? Better to put these plants and these people to work today producing alternative products (reusable utensils maybe?) that inflict less trauma upon our global environment.

 

Our forests cannot fight for themselves. It is the responsibility of all conscientious people to be aware of the damage inflicted by simply sliding those utensils from their paper sleeves. Consumers can and must change their ways and choose more environmentally-friendly alternatives.

문법구조

 

파란색은 주어, 빨간색을 동사입니다. 지문을 읽을때는 항상 주어와 동사의 관계 파악을 우선합니다.

 

1. It is better to 는 ~하는게 낫다라는 표현이며, 해당 문장에서 It is 는 생략 되었습니다. 

 

2. put 은 '~을 두다' 라는 뜻의 타동사 이며 목적어 'these plants and these people' 을 받습니다 , 그 뒤에 to 는 전치사 입니다. 해석은 ' 이러한 공장들과 사람들을 이 일에 배치 하다' 가 됩니다.

 

3. producing 은 현재분사(명사를 수식하는 형용사) 이며 앞의 명사 work 를 수식합니다. 뜻은 '~하는'이라고 해석합니다. 즉, '대체품을 만드는 일' 이라고 해석합니다.

 

1. ~ self(selves) 는 재귀 대명사로 재귀용법, 강조용법, 관용용법, 이 세가지의 용법으로 쓰입니다.

몇몇 사람들은 1회용 젓가락을 산업을 없애는 것이 중국의 필수적인 고용 원천을 파괴하는 것이라고 걱정한다.
